Vision Therapy Quiz: Do You or Your Child Need Vision Therapy?
Reading that never gets easier, headaches after homework, words that swim on the page — these often have less to do with eyesight than with how the eyes work together. Answer a few questions and find out whether it's worth asking us about.
11 quick questions, about a minute
Answer honestly — there are no wrong answers
We'll ask about reading, headaches, focus, and a few other everyday things. At the end you'll get a straight answer about whether it's worth talking to us — including if it isn't.
What the quiz is actually asking about
Four visual skills that a standard eye exam only touches on
Why a regular eye exam can miss this
A standard eye exam is very good at answering one question: how sharply do you see? It measures whether letters on a chart look clear, and whether glasses would make them clearer. That's eyesight.
Vision is bigger than that. It includes keeping both eyes aimed at the same word, holding focus for a full page, moving smoothly from line to line, and making sense of it all. Those skills can be weak while eyesight is a perfect 20/20 — which is exactly why a child can pass every screening, including a children's eye exam, and still dread reading.
That gap is what a binocular vision assessment is designed to close, and it's the reason this quiz asks about behaviour rather than eyesight.
Who looks at your answers
If you choose to send your answers, they go to Dr. Melissa Yeung, who leads vision therapy at our Markham clinic and holds a FOVDR fellowship in vision development and rehabilitation.
She reviews what you told us before replying, so you won't have to explain it all over again — and she'll tell you plainly if she doesn't think an assessment is warranted. If you'd rather read up first, our vision therapy page covers how a program actually runs.
We see vision therapy patients from across the region: Markham, Toronto, Richmond Hill, Thornhill, and Scarborough.
Common questions
Is this vision therapy quiz a diagnosis?
No. It is a short self-assessment that points you in the right direction. It asks about the everyday symptoms most commonly linked to eye teaming and focusing problems, then tells you whether those answers are worth following up on. Only a comprehensive eye exam and a binocular vision assessment with an optometrist can determine whether a vision problem is actually present.
What is vision therapy?
Vision therapy is a personalized, doctor-directed program that trains the connection between the eyes and the brain. It targets skills like eye teaming, focusing, and tracking, which glasses alone cannot correct. Programs typically involve weekly in-office sessions plus short exercises at home.
Can adults do vision therapy, or is it only for children?
Adults can absolutely do vision therapy. The visual system stays adaptable throughout life, and adults often progress well because they are consistent with their home exercises. Adults commonly come to us with eye strain at screens, double vision, difficulty concentrating on close work, or lingering symptoms after a concussion.
My child has 20/20 vision. Can they still have a vision problem?
Yes. 20/20 measures how sharply a single eye sees a letter chart at distance. It says nothing about whether the two eyes work together comfortably, hold focus up close, or track along a line of text. A child can pass a school screening or a standard eye exam and still struggle with reading because of an eye teaming or focusing problem.
Does OHIP cover vision therapy in Ontario?
OHIP covers annual eye exams for children 19 and under and adults 65 and over, but it does not cover vision therapy programs. Many extended health insurance plans do provide coverage. We are happy to walk you through the costs before you commit to anything.
What happens after I take the quiz?
You see your result immediately, with no email required. If the answers suggest a vision problem might be involved, you can send them to us and Dr. Yeung will review them before getting back to you, usually within one business day.
Would you rather just ask us?
You don't have to take the quiz first. Send us an inquiry and we'll tell you whether a vision therapy assessment makes sense for you or your child.
