If you’re exploring vision therapy for yourself or your child, one of the first questions that often comes up is: How much does it cost?

That’s a very reasonable question. Vision therapy is an investment in visual function and quality of life, and understanding the financial aspect is an important part of the decision-making process.

To help you feel informed and comfortable moving forward, we’ve outlined a clear and easy-to-understand overview of vision therapy costs in Ontario, along with the key factors that can influence pricing.

The Short Answer

At most Ontario clinics, including ours:

Component

Typical Cost

Comprehensive binocular vision assessment (takes 2-3 hours)

$300-500

Individual vision therapy session (45-60 min)

$150-$200

Full treatment program (20-40 sessions)

$3,000-$8,000

Home therapy equipment

$50-$200 (one-time or deposit)

Costs vary by clinic, region, and individual treatment needs. The ranges above reflect typical fees in Ontario at the time of writing.

The wide range reflects that every patient’s needs are different. A child with mild convergence insufficiency might complete treatment in 12-16 sessions, while someone recovering from a concussion or managing more complex binocular vision dysfunction may need 30+ sessions.

What Affects the Cost?

Complexity of the condition. Straightforward cases like convergence insufficiency often respond well to shorter treatment programs. More complex conditions—multiple diagnoses, strabismus, amblyopia, developmental delays, or vision problems following brain injury—typically require longer treatment.

Age of the patient. Children’s visual systems tend to be more adaptable, which can sometimes allow for quicker progress. That said, adults can absolutely benefit from vision therapy as well—improvements are very possible, though the process may take a bit more time.

Consistency with home exercises. Patients who regularly practice their home therapy activities between visits often see progress more efficiently. We completely understand that life can get busy—this isn’t about blame—but staying as consistent as possible can influence the overall timeline and total cost of therapy.

Session frequency. Most programs involve weekly in-office sessions. More frequent sessions don’t necessarily mean faster results; the brain needs time to consolidate new visual skills between appointments.

What’s Included in a Vision Therapy Session at Elevate Vision Care?

When you pay for a vision therapy session, you’re getting:

  • One-on-one time with a trained vision therapist or neuro-optometrist

  • Supervision by a fellowship-certified optometrist who reviews progress and adjusts the treatment plan

  • Advanced equipment including computer-based programs, therapeutic lenses, prisms, and 3D activities

  • Progress monitoring with objective measurements of improvement

  • Home therapy assignments customized to reinforce in-office work

Vision therapy is a hands-on, guided process rather than a one-time purchase. It involves ongoing care, support, and adjustments along the way to help ensure the best possible outcomes.

What About Insurance Coverage for Vision Therapy?

OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan)

  • Vision therapy assessments: Not covered

  • Vision therapy sessions: Not covered

The comprehensive vision therapy assessment used to determine whether your child would benefit from vision therapy is more in-depth than a routine eye exam. For children with valid OHIP(opens in new tab) coverage, additional fees typically apply for the extended evaluation involved.

Private Insurance

Coverage varies significantly by plan. We recommend checking directly with your insurance provider for details.

What to ask your insurance provider:

1. Is vision therapy assessments or sessions covered under my plan?

2. What is the annual maximum?

3. Is there a per-session limit or only an annual maximum?

Many of our patients find they have some coverage they didn’t know about, while others discover their plans don’t cover vision therapy at all. We recommend checking before starting treatment so there are no surprises.

Health Spending Accounts (HSA)

If your employer offers a Health Spending Account, vision therapy is typically an eligible expense. HSAs allow you to pay for qualified medical expenses—including vision therapy assessments and sessions.

Is Vision Therapy Worth the Investment?

This is ultimately a personal decision, but here are a few things to consider:

Think about the bigger picture. Many patients and families come to us after trying options such as tutoring, occupational therapy, workplace adjustments, or other support that helped in some ways but didn’t fully resolve the challenges they were experiencing. When vision plays a role, addressing it directly can often feel more effective than continuing to work around the symptoms.

Think about the timeline. A typical vision therapy program lasts about 4–8 months. For many individuals and families, this can feel more manageable when compared with years of academic difficulties, ongoing work-related strain, repeated therapies, or the cumulative impact these challenges can have on confidence, productivity, and quality of life.

Think about progress. Vision therapy isn’t a quick or automatic fix, but many children and adults do experience meaningful improvements, especially with consistent care and follow-through. Over time, these changes can positively affect learning, work performance, comfort, and overall day-to-day functioning.

Payment Options

We understand that enrolling in a vision therapy program is a significant investment. Options that may help:

  • Payment plans. To help make care more manageable, payment plan options may be available to spread the cost over time. These plans are offered through third-party providers, and our clinic is not connected to or responsible for their policies or agreements.

  • Insurance pre-authorization. We can provide documentation to help you understand your coverage before committing and, if needed, prepare a letter for your insurance provider to support your inquiry.

The Bottom Line

Vision therapy is a meaningful investment, and we believe you deserve a clear understanding of what’s involved before making a decision. The cost reflects the advanced training required to provide effective care, the individualized one-on-one attention each patient receives, and the ongoing professional guidance needed to ensure the program is progressing as intended.

If you’re unsure whether vision therapy is right for you or your child, the first step is a comprehensive assessment. This evaluation helps determine whether a treatable vision concern is present and, if so, what a recommended treatment plan would look like. From there, you’ll have the information you need to decide how to move forward with confidence.
