Ortho-K: Clear Vision Without Daytime Glasses or Contacts

Custom-fit lenses worn overnight reshape your cornea while you sleep

Ortho-k (orthokeratology) is a non-surgical, fully reversible way to see clearly without glasses or daytime contacts. For children, ortho-k is also one of the most effective treatments to slow myopia progression. Our fellowship-trained optometrists fit patients from across the GTA.

What is Ortho-K?

Ortho-k (orthokeratology) is a non-surgical vision correction method using specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses. You wear them while sleeping, and they gently reshape your cornea overnight. In the morning, you remove the lenses and enjoy clear vision throughout the day — no glasses or contacts needed.

Beyond vision correction, ortho-k is clinically proven to slow myopia progression in children. Studies including the LORIC trial and ROMIO study demonstrate significant efficacy. By starting early, a child's risk of developing high myopia and associated eye health complications later in life can be meaningfully reduced.

Fit by an Optometrist Who Wears Ortho-K Herself

Dr. Melissa Yeung first wore ortho-k lenses as a child, and she wears them again today as an adult. She knows the treatment from the patient's side of the lens in a way very few optometrists do — including what it is like to start, to step away for a period of life, and to return.

That firsthand experience shapes how she assesses candidacy, fits lenses, and guides patients through the first few weeks of adjustment. It is also why she now fits her whole family in ortho-k.

When you work with Dr. Yeung, you are working with someone who has worn ortho-k herself — as a kid, and again today.

The Ortho-K Fitting Process

1. Consultation & Mapping

We assess your prescription, corneal shape, and eye health using advanced corneal topography to determine if ortho-k is right for you.

2. Custom Lens Fitting

Your lenses are custom-designed based on your corneal map. We teach you proper insertion, removal, and care techniques.

3. Follow-Up & Monitoring

Regular check-ups ensure optimal fit and vision. For children, we track myopia progression with axial length measurements.

Ortho-K Cost & Insurance Coverage

Ortho-k programs typically include the initial fitting, custom lenses, lens care supplies, and follow-up visits over the first year. Final pricing depends on prescription complexity and whether you are fitting one eye or both.

Ortho-k is not covered by OHIP, but many extended health insurance plans cover contact lenses, which can include ortho-k. We direct bill most major Canadian insurance providers for your convenience.

Ortho-K FAQs

What is ortho-k?

Ortho-k (orthokeratology) uses specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep. You remove the lenses in the morning and enjoy clear vision throughout the day without glasses or daytime contacts.

How much does ortho-k cost?

Ortho-k programs typically include the initial fitting, custom lenses, lens care supplies, and follow-up visits over the first year. Final pricing depends on prescription complexity. Ortho-k is not covered by OHIP, but many extended health plans cover a portion of ortho-k lenses. Contact us for a personalized quote after your consultation.

Is ortho-k safe for children?

Yes. Ortho-k is Health Canada approved and has been used safely for decades. It is particularly beneficial for children as it can slow myopia progression significantly, reducing the risk of serious eye conditions later in life. Children as young as 6-8 years old can be fitted for ortho-k.

How does ortho-k slow myopia progression?

Ortho-k lenses reshape the cornea to create a specific optical profile that signals the eye to slow its elongation. Clinical studies including the LORIC and ROMIO trials have demonstrated significant reduction in myopia progression compared to glasses or regular contacts.

How long does it take to see results with ortho-k?

Most patients notice improved vision after the first night, with optimal results within 1-2 weeks of consistent wear. The full myopia control effect develops over several months of regular overnight wear.

Can adults use ortho-k?

Yes. While ortho-k is particularly beneficial for children to slow myopia progression, adults also use it for glasses-free vision during the day — ideal for sports, swimming, dusty work environments, or anyone who dislikes wearing glasses or daytime contacts.

What happens if I stop wearing ortho-k lenses?

Ortho-k effects are temporary and reversible. If you stop wearing the lenses, your cornea gradually returns to its original shape over a few days, and your vision returns to its previous prescription.

Is ortho-k covered by OHIP or insurance?

Ortho-k is not covered by OHIP. However, many extended health insurance plans cover contact lenses, which may include ortho-k. We direct bill most major insurance providers for your convenience.
