Sabae craft, three generations on
The TOKIWA made workshop traces its roots to a small Sabae eyewear shop opened by the founder’s grandfather in 1951. Sabae, in Fukui Prefecture, is the region where the majority of Japanese eyewear is made — a small city with a hundred-year tradition of craft glasses production.
The modern TOKIWA brand was launched in 2019 by the third generation of that family, and renamed TOKIWA made in 2021. The name TOKIWA (常磐) means “everlasting” in Japanese — a tribute to the founding generation, and a signal that the frames are designed to be worn quietly over the long run rather than chase passing trends.
Frames are produced in a combination of machine work and hand finishing in Sabae. The catalogue is organized by T-series model number rather than named collection lines, and the line spans pure titanium, acetate fronts on titanium temples, and a signature combination front that brings acetate and titanium together in the same piece.
What We Stock
TOKIWA made at Elevate

Collection 01
T-1951 — the namesake
Named for 1951, the year the founding generation opened the original Sabae workshop. T-1951 is the brand’s namesake — a pure titanium frame that anchors the catalogue and signals what TOKIWA made is about.

Collection 02
Pure titanium
Titanium across both front and temples — geometric, minimalist silhouettes finished by hand in Sabae. Light enough to forget you are wearing them, with the structural precision titanium allows. The rest of the all-metal line beyond T-1951.

Collection 03
Acetate fronts
The bulk of the catalogue. A Japanese acetate front paired with the brand’s standard β-titanium temples — warmer in colour and feel than full titanium, with hand-polished acetate surfaces and the lightness of a titanium chassis. Round and rectangular shapes across several models.

Collection 04
Combination fronts
A brand signature. The front works titanium and Japanese acetate together in the same piece, paired with the standard β-titanium temples. The result reads warm like an acetate frame but with metal accents where extra structure or visual contrast is wanted. Reserved for the T-1957 and T-1958 styles.
